The commitment of junior defensive tackle Grant Gibson from Charlotte Mallard Creek was not a complete surprise. Although he professed to us over a month ago that he wanted to see what was going to come his way in the spring and summer in terms of offers, quietly there were indications that Gibson was going to make an early decision.

NCSU surged to the front for Gibson last spring and summer and never really relinquished the position. Interestingly, UNC had a lot of personal connections to Gibson that could have made them a serious threat, but NC State won over Gibson and his family.

Gibson’s commitment could have an impact on others. He is close with fellow Mallard Creek junior linemen Eric Douglas and T.J. Moore. At the moment, we get the vibe that NCSU is in better shape with Moore. Sources have indicated to us that Moore’s top two is emerging as South Carolina and NC State, and a decision could come down before spring is over.

Douglas has previously mentioned that he will make a decision by April. If we recall correctly, he has even indicated that he would simply tip off his choice by showing up at their spring game. However, unless Florida amps up its efforts we tend to get a vibe that South Carolina and UNC could be top two there.

He did however join Moore for an unofficial visit on Feb. 27, and the Pack is hopeful that they gave NCSU some momentum there. Between Moore and Douglas, the general consensus is Moore has the upside while Douglas is more polished.

UNC obviously has a commitment from Mallard Creek star athlete Ryan Jones. However, reports indicate that Jones took an unofficial visit to South Carolina with Moore and Douglas this week.

As we noted before on the board, we picked up a sense from talking with sources at Mallard Creek last month that few expected his UNC pledge to remain solid without at least mutual overtures between Jones and other schools. However, the bigger threat for UNC appear to be big brand name schools from the SEC than NCSU.

The pledge of Raleigh Wakefield quarterback Matt McKay was even less surprising than Gibson’s. There was a quiet thought that developed middle of last week that McKay’s commitment was imminent. The only mild surprise was that he went ahead and cancelled plans to visit Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech. This is what we wrote in last week’s War Room:

“In recruiting, the quarterback derby appears to have three candidates at the top, but one could be moving ahead of the others on his timeline. Raleigh Wakefield’s Matt McKay has not hidden his affection towards NC State since January, and after a couple of recent visits may be getting close.

“McKay is going to check out Pittsburgh, who at the moment is State’s apparent lone serious competition for him, this weekend. Former NC State offensive coordinator Matt Canada is now at Pittsburgh. Then the question could become will McKay wait to see if Tennessee and Virginia Tech, two programs that have been expressing serious interest offer, or will he go ahead and pull the trigger.”

We initially believed that given small numbers, NCSU would take only one quarterback in the 2017 class. Over the past week, our thoughts have changed on that.

We do believe that the Wolfpack is still hoping to pursue Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley’s Hendon Hooker, who added offers from Missouri and Virginia Tech this week to go with Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and South Carolina.

Hooker is supposed to decide soon. The pre-McKay decision vibe was that NC State was a quiet leader for Hooker. The post-McKay decision vibe is that Hooker might prefer to be the lone quarterback in the class, thus it could be a hard sell for the Pack.

There is also four-star Jake Bentley from Opelika (Ala.) High on the board, although NCSU is currently on the outside of his top three. We also had a reporter from the Rivals.com network contact us with quotes he gathered from signal caller Todd Centeio from West Palm Beach (Fla.) Dwyer High (same high school as Jacoby Brissett and Shawn Boone).

There was a time late last summer where Centeio, a former Miami commit, looked like a lock to end up at NCSU. Both sides slowed down that recruitment however, and it is interesting that when Canada was let go and ended up at Pittsburgh, he did not extend an offer tom Centeio like he did McKay and Hooker.

Centeio listed Indiana, NC State, Toledo and Wake Forest as the four schools in the mix. He additionally said these two things:

“NC State told me that they are taking two quarterbacks. My high school coach is good friends with [Dave Doeren], and he told me coach that they were probably going to take two quarterbacks.”

We will continue to monitor Centeio to see if he emerges as a viable option as a potential second quarterback. Our guess is that State is content with McKay, but they would take another signal caller if they deemed him good enough and worthy; not for the sake of simply having two in the class.

NC State did the same thing in the class of 2016, aiming for two, but not reaching for a second quarterback after landing Dylan Parham of Raleigh.

Our hope (no guarantee) is top start rolling out the top 25 (or whatever the number may be) list next week. Based on early feedback, we get the sense that NCSU is doing well at receiver, offensive line and defensive line in this class so far. They could also end up getting a significant chunk of the class from in-state prospects.

In addition to Moore, Douglas and Hooker, who we mentioned earlier, these N.C. natives are also high on NCSU from what we have gathered (although not all of them may have committable offers):

- Receiver Jaquarii Roberson, Ahoskie’s Hertford County High
- Receiver Emeka Emezie, Waxhaw’s Marvin Ridge High
- Tight end Jeremiah Hall, Charlotte’s Vance High
- Defensive end Taijh Alston, Cameron’s Union Pines High
- Defensive lineman Matthew Butler, Garner High
- Defensive lineman Xach Gill, Wake Forest High
- Linebacker Sherrod Greene, Rocky Mount High
- Linebacker Darius Hodge, Wake Forest High
- Defensive back Germane Crowell Jr., Winston-Salem’s Carver High
- Safety Jaylin Dickerson, Southern Pines’ Pinecrest High

There has been some talk about NC State’s chances of making the NIT. It is important to remember that a few years ago, the NIT was taken over by the NCAA and one of the rule changes was that a regular season conference winner that did not get into the NCAA Tournament automatically qualified for the NIT.

This basically applies to the small, one-bid conferences. If their regular season winner did not win the postseason conference tournament, at least now they have the NIT. For instance, North Florida won the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season and Bucknell, who State beat earlier this season, won the Patriot League.

Both have already been upset in their respective conference tournaments, thus both are locked into the NIT. North Florida is in the unique situation of hoping Stetson wins the conference tourney because they are ineligible due to APR, and then North Florida gets the automatic bid. Thus it is harder to get into the NIT than many may remember. Of course if NC State does not have a winning record it’s a moot point.

We mentioned last week how things have fallen apart between senior shooting guard Rawle Alkins and Raleigh Word of God. Alkins hasn’t played since late January/early February, but he came out for Senior Night to watch the game a week ago. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound shooting guard, who is currently ranked No. 9 in the country in the class of 2016, then sat in the stands behind the visiting team’s bench. That was an unspoken way of saying “Alkins probably won’t suit up for the Holy Rams again.”

A clear-cut leader has emerged for Alkins, who NC State has been recruiting off and on since July 2014 — Arizona. NCSU will need to beat former Wolfpack assistant coach Sean Miller seems to be the consensus word. Some schools have already backed off of Alkins, and he originally didn’t list Arizona on his final list. He eventually added the Wildcats and unofficially visited and then officially visited in Tucson.

Arizona, UNLV and St. John’s all have received official visits. NC State, UNC, and perhaps Louisville, could be vying for his last two official visits. Indiana, Kentucky and Kansas round out his “public list” but it’s unknown if those three schools are even still recruiting the Brooklyn, N.Y. native.

Alkins last attended the Clemson at NC State game Feb. 20.

Rivals.com recruiting analyst Eric Bossi updated his class of 2017 and class of 2018 rankings this week, and a total of four players from the state of North Carolina were listed.

Concord (N.C.) Robinson junior point guard Lavar Batts Jr. was ranked No. 100 in the class of 2017, and he’s playing at 6 p.m. Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C., in the NCHSAA 3A western state semifinals against Hickory.

Ty-Shon Alexander of Concord could also be lumped in with Batts, but the junior shooting guard now attends Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy. The Creighton verbal commit is ranked No. 89.

Greensboro Day junior combo forward J.P. Moorman, Raleigh Ravenscroft junior point guard Michael Okauru, Garner junior combo guard Thomas Allen, Charlotte Independence junior power forward Justyn Hamilton and Raleigh Neuse Christian junior shooting guard Kaleb Hunter, could be the potential guys who break through in the rankings when traveling team season starts in April from what we’ve observed in the NCISAA and NCHSAA playoffs.

Allen is also still alive in the playoffs, playing in Fayetteville on Saturday. There is a lot of pressure on NC State to “get it right” with Allen from the Garner Road traveling team coaches. Some have said Allen is basically going through the Devonte Graham of Raleigh path, and that has been heightened since Graham is averaging 11.0 points and 3.6 assists per game during his sophomore year at Kansas, which is ranked No. 1 in the country.

UNC commit Rechon Black of Concord High is the highest rated in-state prospect in the class of 2018, checking in at No. 13. Charlotte Providence Day junior point guard Devon Dotson was at No. 51 and Concord Cannon School sophomore combo forward Jarius Hamilton was at No. 54.

Wilson Greenfield School sophomore point guard Coby White and Raleigh St. David’s sophomore small forward Kris Monroe could be strong candidates when the class of 2018 gets expanded from a top 75 to 150. Recruiting gurus are already pointing out that the class of 2018 could be one of the weaker ones in years. That could mean more aggressive recruiting in 2017 as a result.

I see no way we convince two QBs to sign up with us. Next two years you'd most likely have Jalan, Jakobi, Dylan plus the two from Pack17? I don't see why McKay or Hooker would be down with that.

Would make more sense in my mind to get a transfer in that situation if you want depth.

I am a Wolfpack fan. I look forward to watching my teams compete every time they take the field or court. I enjoy every game, win or lose. I am very much looking forward to the game tomorrow. And the so-called ACC tournament and whatever might come next.

Why whine about the season? If you don't want to watch, don't.

There is a new postseason tournament in Las Vegas that could be in play as well.

Not to mention this team has a lot coming back next year- ( as far as we know )

The more practices and tournaments can only help for next year.

Top-seeded Belmont, regular season champ of the Ohio Valley, lost in their tournament semifinals today to Austin Peay. Another spot in the NIT likely taken.

I spoke to someone and they believe allen can really score at the acc level and that state should get him. I agree the history with graham puts added pressure. Don't wait - take. Don't want to watch this guy to become the next local to leave and have a career elsewhere when we have needs.

Gottfried always has left over scholarships, I have no clue why he doesn't take a flyer on local kids occasionally who have the chance to develop into great players. Why on freaking earth does he not do this with a PG and SG is beyond me. You could have a guy stick around potentially for 3-4 years and either be a backup guy or a legit player.

That's my biggest grip with MG. He has no awareness for finding that 8th/9th guy that can absolutely save your program in a year like this. Who cares if the guy transfers after a few years? You lost zilch considering we NEVER use all of our allotted scholarships.

I feel Gott is a good coach but he is not a great coach. He is a better recruiting coach than a game coach by far. His recruiting now is starting to be a big question mark. I personal feel his days are numbered with the pack. Our basketball and football programs have got to take a step up. I feel Doeron and Gott are under the microscope.

In what way is his recruiting a question mark? He just signed Dennis Smith Jr who is the highest ranked player our program has signed in decades.

Next season we'll have Smith (top 5), Abu (top 50), Rowan (top 50), Anya (top 60), Henderson (top100), Martin Twins (top 100), Dorn (top 150), Kirk (top 150), Freeman (NR). If by a miracle Barber comes back that's another top 25 guy.

Throw in guys like Warren, Purvis, Lewis, Turner and Lacey and recruiting definitely hasn't been the problem.

Because those players transfer when they don't get minutes. See Josh Davis for example.

So, what do you lose in that situation? I'd rather take the risk on a kid like that to have as depth than to have nobody at all. Gott needs to develop a way to keep solid contributors around for 3-4 years. I'd go after more kids like the Martin twins personally. You can tell they are team first guys, it was obvious on the recruiting trail that was their personality too.

I just think there are plenty of 3 star kids who stick around for a shot as juniors. Now Gott would obviously have to get off his schtick about having a 7/8 man rotation.

Until it doesn't happen you should always expect someone to transfer under Gott. Happened every year.

And we've also had transfers IN that IMO have more than compensated for the transfers OUT. I think every year but maybe we skipped one.
