This will be a semi-important weekend for NC State football recruiting even if they are themselves relatively inactive.

Both Georgia Tech and UNC are having spring games, and some key prospects will be traveling to those scrimmages.

Most notably, four-star quarterback M.J. Morris from Pace Academy in Atlanta is expected at Georgia Tech’s spring game on Friday. Like NC State, Georgia Tech’s quarterback board is currently Morris and fellow four-star Braden Davis from Middletown (Del.) High. However, GT’s odds seem much better with Morris.

Among Georgia Tech insiders, there is confidence that Morris could be committed to the Yellow Jackets before the month of April is over. Other sources have previously told us that Morris is fairly certain to wait until May to be a decision, and is set to visit Nebraska May 1 (even though the Cornhuskers are considered a long shot). We continue to hear that previously perceived favorite Florida State is not as strong as thought, and most eyes in Tallahassee are on four-star A.J. Duffy instead.

What happens with Morris after this trip to his hometown school’s scrimmage could tell a lot with how that recruitment is going to unfold.

Over in Chapel Hill, many in-state prospects are expected for their spring game, including two players that seem to be inching towards potential UNC-NC State showdowns: four-star running back Michael Allen from Rose High in Greenville and three-star linebacker Xavier Simmons from Northwest Guilford High in Greensboro.

UNC has held a lead for Simmons for much of the process, but NC State has done a good job to get Simmons on campus twice, including for its spring game. Meanwhile, Allen has seemed like a toss-up for much of the recruiting process.

One small update on a prospect we wrote about this week: three-star defensive lineman Davin Jackson from Sumter (S.C.) High will not be playing in the Palmetto State this fall. Jackson’s family instead is moving to the state of Georgia.

A quick note on women’s basketball with the news that long-time assistant Lindsay Edmonds is leaving to take the head coaching job at Rice, a name to watch for could be Ashley Williams. The former walk-on ended up playing a large role for head coach Wes Moore’s program as it began its rise.

She is now a full-time assistant coach at Indiana (just completed her second season), and was on the bench when the Hoosiers defeated NC State in the Sweet 16 this past March.

There has not been a lot new to report on men’s basketball. As we have said the past couple of weekly premium chats, there is a feeling that the roster that is set now for the Wolfpack may be what it looks like when the team tips off in the fall. One of the biggest question we are following is what will fifth-year senior wing Devon Daniels do after tearing his ACL in January.

Soon attention will turn to the 2022 recruiting class as the dead period ends. Complicating matters is not yet having a firm handle on what the scholarship numbers will look like. There has been an expectation that at some point this spring or summer the Dennis Smith Jr. case will have resolved itself, which could help provide some clarity.

Next week at this time we’ll start to be on NFL Draft watch for junior nose tackle Alim McNeill. Last fall, the first word we heard from a source about McNeill's draft stock was that he could go in the general range of the third round, and that still seems to be the case based on our research earlier in the week.

The question is will offensive guard/center Joe Sculthorpe and/or tight end Cary Angeline join McNeill? The vibe we picked up from sources who observed Pro Day is that Sculthorpe did well and helped himself. The key for Angeline has always been about what he showed on film: a sure-handed, large tight end target, more than his workout numbers.
