We start this War Room with an update on the quarterback recruiting.

• First, four-star quarterback Braden Davis from Middletown (Del.) High is announcing his choice tonight (6 p.m.), and we fully anticipate it being South Carolina, if we are reading the tea leaves correctly. South Carolina has some Delaware connections surrounding its program, and they, along with Georgia Tech, made the move of offering his teammate and friend, three-star defensive end Tomiwa Durojaiye.

• Thus all eyes should, if Davis picks elsewhere, be on four-star MJ Morris from Pace Academy in Atlanta. We will be revealing our first edition of the mock classes really soon, and we can go ahead and preview that Morris will be the quarterback. And for good reason.

Morris’ proclamation in an interview over the weekend that Florida State was his favorite may have been the culprit to convince four-star AJ Duffy at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., to go ahead and commit to the Seminoles before Morris. Our sources had indicated to us that Duffy was FSU’s preference for its second quarterback spot all along, but that it was not going to turn away Morris for him.

That brings us to the position we expected would be the case with Morris: a Georgia Tech-NC State battle. This is where there were conflicting reports. Some have suggested that Morris wanted to get out of Atlanta for college, others suggested it was to the contrary. The chatter coming out of GT-land is that the Yellow Jackets are getting impatient with Morris and moving on. Whether that is true or if Georgia Tech is moving on because of that the chatter that Morris was inclined to move out of the region for college, we do not know.

Regardless, Georgia Tech, for the moment at least, just may not be NC State’s chief rival for Morris. The Yellow Jackets have been turning up the heat on Maryland commit AJ Swann from Canton (Ga.) Cherokee High. Ironically, Swann was a standout at the Rivals Camp in Atlanta this past weekend. Whether or not that influenced Georgia Tech’s thinking is unclear, but there is a feeling of confidence among GT insiders that a switch could happen.

It should be noted Maryland themselves landed a second QB commit this past week.

If everything pieces together like we think it does at the moment, the key will be NC State surviving his trip to Nebraska this weekend for the Cornhuskers’ spring game. We would not totally discount Nebraska, either. A good visit to Lincoln could make things interesting after this weekend, but going into the trip, the feeling was the Cornhuskers were a bit behind the top three of FSU, Georgia Tech and NC State.

On a side note, before conspiracies pop up, Morris received mixed reviews for his performance at the Rivals Camp which leads us to believe it could lead to a ratings drop (he is currently at No. 196 nationally). Swann was actually named QB MVP of the camp over Morris.

Morris is certainly a take for NC State, but one of the keys to remember going forward is the numbers situation and how it plays out. If the NCAA does not make any adjustments to the 85 limit, then NC State is technically at that 85 limit right now after recently landing three-star center Rylan Vann.

The question is how many of the 16 repeat juniors are interested in coming back for a senior year? Some, like running back Ricky Person Jr., receiver Thayer Thomas, center Grant Gibson, FSU defensive line transfer Cory Durden and linebacker Isaiah Moore, among others, may consider moving on if they have big seasons in 2021.

Others like defensive lineman Dante Johnson and safety/receiver Max Fisher may decide it’s time to move on if they graduate, like tight end Dylan Autenrieth and offensive tackle Justin Witt did this past offseason.

Figuring out how the numbers will work is the chief challenge facing head coach Dave Doeren and his revamped recruiting office led by Merci Falaise. It’s a main reason why recruiting has been slower to unfold this year. The anticipation though is that the month of June will be a hectic one with hopefully some more clarity.

It remains to be seen, but under Falaise’s predecessor Billy Glasscock, who is now at Texas, NC State was shifting towards adding a focus on the transfer portal and saving scholarships in each class for immediate help. Our guess is that will continue to be the case. It's another factor to keep in mind when considering the size of the class. We can say that last fall there was talk of having single-digit number of high school signees in the 2022 class.
