The commitment of four-star quarterback MJ Morris, who will be returning to Carrollton (Ga.) High after spending his junior year at Pace Academy in Atlanta, was expected to announce his commitment to NC State last Saturday, word of which came down from our sources to us on Friday afternoon after our morning release of the War Room.

It was pushed back, but there was no second-thoughts or cold feet in this situation. Our understanding has been that Morris was getting an edit done to make the announcement and that’s why it took longer.

Followers of the War Room would know that we have long maintained that Morris was probably NC State’s most realistic opportunity among the group of four-star quarterbacks that offensive coordinator Tim Beck pursued in the 2022 class, even as more attention was probably focused on players like Austin (Tex.) Westlake’s Cade Klubnik (who ended up at Clemson).

Part of the reason is that Morris was more patient, and there was a wave of QB commits that took up a lot of his original options. A key dynamic was Florida State’s dogged pursuit of a second QB eventually landed on four-star AJ Duffy of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

There was a time when a lot of national attention was focused on Nebraska after Morris’ visit there in May, but as we accurately noted at the time, that was overblown. Morris always planned to take that trip, but sources had told us that realistically the Cornhuskers were a long shot, a fact driven home when his father did not make the trip.

Then it came down to Georgia Tech and NC State. In March, a source told us that Georgia Tech may have taken a lead on Florida State. FSU insiders then started sensing the same thing. That was when the Yellow Jackets seemed to peak in his recruitment.

It should be noted, even at that point we had some tell us that there was those close to Morris who did not feel like he was too enticed about being that close to home for college. A visit to NC State in April proved to be a pivotal moment for NC State, when the Pack graduated to a position of legitimate chance.

Not to be lost in all this was the tight relationship that Morris had with his former teammate Lyndon Cooper, who is an early enrollee at NC State. Without Cooper, it is highly possible that NC State is not landing Morris.

What’s next for the Wolfpack? Watch for three-star defensive end Nick Campbell from Lake Minneola (Fla.) High as he arrives between 6:30 and 7 tonight for his official visit that will conclude Sunday afternoon.

While Campbell’s intention is to take four official visits in June, the Pack stands in a good position with the 6-foot-3, 270-pounder entering the trips. Linemen like Campbell and 6-foot-3, 260-pound Davin Jackson from Sumter (S.C.) High fit the type that the Wolfpack is looking for in its exterior players on the three-man front.

Both have the frame that can look like sophomore Savion Jackson and freshman Davin Vann, who are somewhat the prototype. Although Vann is listed and will play nose tackle, he is also expected to get a chance to play on the edge, too.

Back to Davin Jackson, NC State was a clear leader after he made a visit to Raleigh for the first day following the end of the dead period, and then came the offer from South Carolina. All you need to do is follow Jackson’s social media to know that it was an offer he was hoping to get. If a player is willing to work out for an offer, that’s another indicator it’s a scholarship they want.

That said, we are told that the message NC State is preaching is that it believed in him all along, and that it didn’t need Jackson to work out to find him offer-worthy. We’ll see if that resonates, but there is reason to believe that the Wolfpack could still occupy a spot at the top.
