At this point, a decision from four-star quarterback MJ Morris, who may be returning to Carrollton (Ga.) High after spending his junior year at Pace Academy in Atlanta, looks imminent. We don’t know the exact date yet, although there have been some hints that a commitment video could come this weekend (Saturday?). Keep in mind there have been several false starts in the Morris “commitment watch,” so nothing is given.

That said, it has been widely known that Morris was aiming to decide before the end of the month, and sources have indicated that Morris wanted to keep his decision date close to the vest. We don’t even know if there’ll be a heads up on when a commitment will come down or if Morris will simply drop an announcement.

The three finalists are NC State, Georgia Tech and Nebraska. Based on the information that we have been hearing, there are reasons for optimism if you are a Wolfpack fan, but nothing is certain here. However, if Morris does not pick NC State, then attention will switch to signal callers coming to camp, such as Rolesville (N.C.) High’s Byrum Brown.

The X-factor is there is a school of thought emerging that this year could see a significant amount of decommits, for several reasons. Part of the thinking is that players are making and will make quick decisions based on a single visit and the emotion will wear off over time. Also, colleges face a tricky situation with scholarship numbers, which may lead to some ugly situations if coaches are not careful. Thus there may be quarterbacks coming available later in the recruiting process.

Bottom line on Morris, a commitment could come at any moment, and we would not be shocked if he picks any of the three finalists, although Nebraska would mildly surprise us most. It’s worth noting that the Cornhuskers just set up an official visit with three-star quarterback Richard Torres from San Antonio for the first weekend after the dead period ends, and furthermore we have received word that his father is playing an important role in his recruitment and did not accompany Morris on his trip to Nebraska.

June could potentially be an impactful month of recruiting for NC State, although we have picked up a sense that the Pack is proceeding cautiously, perhaps in part to avoid the sticky situation regarding the numbers that we talked about previously.

While many schools have loaded up aggressively on official visits in June, NC State has been patient and is preferring to bring players in unofficially, especially with in-state prospects like four-star running back Michael Allen from Rose High in Greenville, three-star receiver Wesley Grimes from Millbrook High in Raleigh, four-star linebacker Torren Wright from A.L. Brown High in Kannapolis, recently offered linebacker Daejuan Thompson from Whiteville High and three-star defensive backs Isaiah Crowell from East Forsyth High in Kernersville and Jackson Vick from Southern Nash High in Bailey.

Those seven prospects are all expected to visit unofficially in the month of June, and in the case of a couple of them the hope is to have multiple visits to Raleigh. Of that group, momentum continues to move nicely for Allen, Crowell and Vick, and especially in the case of Allen.

Thus far, as we noted on the board earlier this week, the only two official visits that have been lined up are to a pair of defensive linemen from the state of Florida — three-star Nick Campbell from Lake Minneola High and four-star Brandon Cleveland from Carrollwood High in Tampa. Campbell will be in Raleigh on June 4 and Cleveland, a former Miami commit, the following weekend.

NC State is not one to push aggressively for pledges during an official visit, seemingly preferring to allow players to make commitments when they are most comfortable, but NC State is in a very good spot with the two Floridians heading into the scheduled trips.

A quick note on the football team that is undergoing offseason workouts. Both new transfer arrivals — offensive lineman Chandler Zavala and defensive lineman Cory Durden — have seemingly settled in nicely.

We talked to Zavala’s trainer recently, and he labeled him a “beast.” A source at NC State confirmed that Zavala is a “freak,” and part of what also stands out about him is his maturity.

Expectations have been high for Zavala since he committed. One source told us last fall that he could be good enough to be a day three NFL Draft pick. That said, the proof will come later this summer when preseason camp begins. Until that point, it’s just speculation that needs to be treated with proper caution.

When Durden committed to NC State, a source told us that he said he was coming to Raleigh to be the next Wolfpack defensive line first round draft pick. From all accounts, he appears to have arrived focused and ready to go. Sources close to FSU’s program have told us that there is not much denying on Durden’s physical talent, but the key with him has always been about mental focus and consistency.
