The No. 6 NC State Wolfpack wrestling team hits the road to take on in-state foe Appalachian State Friday night (streamed at 7 p.m. on appstatesports.com).
App is always a tough team and has three wrestlers ranked nationally right now per Intermat rankings — 149 Jonathan Millner at #20, 157 Matt Zovistoski at No. 20 and heavyweight Cary Miller at No. 19. FloWrestling (rankings I personally prefer) doesn't have Millner in its top 25, but has Zovistoski at No. 17 and Miller at No. 24.
Zovistoski gave redshirt junior Hayden Hidlay a tough match in the semifinals of the Wolfpack Open, but Hidlay won 3-2. Their 133 — junior Codi Russell — is also solid. He at least signed with NC State out of high school, though I can't recall if he ever actually made it to campus. He was an NCAA qualifier last year after he won the SoCon and lost a 3-2 decision to NC State's Jarrett Trombley at the Wolfpack Open earlier this year.
There were probably a few other matchups between the two schools there — I definitely remember 174 Thomas Flitz beat Daniel Bullard at the Wolfpack Open, so good revenge match there for Bullard.
However, the biggest news and thing to watch is that redshirt junior Nick Reenan is expected to wrestle. The 197-pounder is currently ranked fourth nationally at the weight by InterMat and was No. 5 by Flo until they removed him due to inactivity this week. A .500 wrestler (sophomore Paul Carson) should be a great way to ease him back into competition.
